  SKIING
Skiing was introduced in Catalonia on year 1908, thanks to the creation of a new department inside the Centre Excurionista de Catalunya (Excursionism Centre of Catalonia): the so called Mountain Sports Department. That year took place the first expedition to Rasos de Peguera ( el Berguedà). In year 1921 the first crossing Núria-Puigmal-La Molina was made and, the following year, they ascended to the top of Aneto mountain.

   CROSS COUNTRY SKIING/ NORDIC SKIING

Age:

From 6 years
Localization: Different cross country skiing trails in Pyrenees.

Called Nordic Skiing too because of its origin: Scandinavia. Cross country skiing consists in glide over the snow with the impulse of legs and arms of the skier. In order to make easier this practice, some circuits are enabled with marked rails, used as guides for skiers gliding through it.

In present cross country skiing there're two different techniques:

  • Classic technique or alternative step: movement consists in doing a strong impulse first with one of the legs, so that ski can glide on the trail, and afterwards repeat it with the other leg, and go on repeating this movement alternatively with both legs. It's very important to accompany each leg impulse with one stick impulse, moving the opposite arm. The skis are kept parallel and do not deviate from the tracks in the snow.
  • Skater step or Skating: In this technique, skis glide to the right and to the left by alternative movement/ impulse of both legs, similar as ice skaters do.

  ITINERARIES WITH SNOW RAQUETS

Age:

From 8 years

Snow raquets are special footwear used to walk over the snow. Their surface is flat and much bigger that the foot, so that person's weight is well distributed and this avoids that feet sink into the snow. Raquets are coupled to trekking boots by straps, and to avoid equilibrium lost, it's advisable to use ski sticks.

No previous learning is needed to do this activity, and it allows doing excursions on grounds where otherwise it would be practically impossible to walk. Simulating being the habitants of polar lands, we can complement this activity constructing igloos.
